About the IHF Men’s Handball World Championship

The World Men’s Handball Championship is a competition of the men’s national handball teams that has been held since 1938 under the auspices of the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The World Women’s Handball Championship has been held since 1957.

2025 World Men’s Handball Championship

The 2025 World Men’s Handball Championship will be held from 9 to 26 January in Croatia, Denmark and Norway. The tournament will bring together 32 of the strongest teams who will compete for the world champion title. This event will be the 29th in the history of men’s world championships and promises many exciting matches and moments.

The tournament’s favorites are traditionally France, Denmark, Spain and Sweden, the leaders of world handball in recent years. However, teams from other countries, such as Germany or Egypt, may also spring surprises.

The games will be held in several host cities with modern arenas, providing excellent conditions for both athletes and fans. This championship will not only be a sporting celebration, but also an important milestone in the popularization of handball around the world.

History of the Championship

The first World Men’s Handball Championship took place on 5-6 February 1938 in Berlin. Four teams took part in it. The German team won the gold medal.

Due to the Second World War, the next World Championship took place 16 years later (in 1954), with 16 teams making the final.

Since 1994, tournaments have been held every 2 years. 24 teams have started to take part in the finals tournaments.

In 2021, 32 teams competed in the final for the first time.

The French team has the most championship titles in the history of the World Men’s Handball Championship (6).
