About the IHF Men’s Handball World Championship

The World Men’s Handball Championship is a competition of the men’s national handball teams that has been held since 1938 under the auspices of the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The World Women’s Handball Championship has been held since 1957.

2023 World Men’s Handball Championship

The IHF World Men’s Handball Championship will be held from 11 to 29 January 2023 in Poland and Sweden. Team Denmark is the two-time reigning handball world champions, having won the championships in 2019 and 2021.

Initially, 8 countries expressed a desire to host the World Championships: France, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, South Korea, Sweden and Switzerland.

On 21 April 2015, Sweden and Poland announced their joint intention to host the tournament. This is the first time that Poland will host the World Men’s Handball Championship.

The tournament will take place in four cities in Poland and five in Sweden. The opening match will be played in Katowice, Poland and the final in Stockholm.

History of the World Men’s Handball Championship

The first World Men’s Handball Championship took place on 5-6 February 1938 in Berlin. Four teams took part in it. The German team won the gold medal.

Due to the Second World War, the next World Championship took place 16 years later (in 1954), with 16 teams making the final.

Since 1994, tournaments have been held every 2 years. 24 teams have started to take part in the finals tournaments.

In 2021, 32 teams competed in the final for the first time.

The French team has the most championship titles in the history of the World Men’s Handball Championship (6).

2025, 2027 World Men’s Handball Championship

According to preliminary information, the World Men’s Handball Championship will be held in 2025 in Croatia, Denmark, Norway, and in 2027 in Germany.
