About the UEFA Super Cup
The UEFA Super Cup is an official football tournament consisting of a single match between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League of the previous season. The Super Cup match opens the European football season.
2024 Super Cup
The 49th UEFA Super Cup will take place on 14 August 2024 at the National Stadium in Warsaw (Poland). The match will take place between the Real Madrid team (winner of the UEFA Champions League 2023/2024) and the Atalanta team (winner of the UEFA Europa League 2023/2024).
History of the UEFA Super Cup
The foundation of the Super Cup dates back to 1972. The same year the first match took place. AFC Ajax was the first team to win the Super Cup. Back then, the Dutch players were regarded as one of the strongest teams.
However, the first Super Cup under UEFA auspices was held in 1974.
The original format of the tournament envisaged home-and-away matches.
The first experience of a one-day match occurred in 1984.
Since 1998, the Super Cup format switched to a one-day match on a permanent basis.
At the end of the 1998-99 season, it was decided to hold the Super Cup match between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
In 2008, a Russian football club won the Super Cup for the first time. FC Zenit Saint Petersburg defeated England’s Manchester United with a score of 2:1.
