About the Basketball World Cup
The Bаsketball World Cup (also known as the FIBA Basketball World Cup) is an international basketball competition involving men’s national teams. The championship is held once every four years under the auspices of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). 32 teams take part in the event. The winner of the previous championship is the Spanish national team. There is also the FIBA Women’s World Championship, which takes place a year earlier than the men’s competition.
2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup
The 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup will be held in Qatar — for the first time in history, a Middle Eastern country will host this tournament. The organizers promise to hold the games in modern arenas using the latest technology and maximum comfort for spectators and players.
32 national teams are expected to participate, including:
- Traditional leaders: USA, Spain, France, Serbia, Canada;
- Asian and African representatives: Japan, China, Nigeria, South Sudan;
- And promising debutants and “dark horses” who can surprise.
Tournament favorites:
USA — multiple champions with a rich reserve of NBA stars;
Serbia — with a strong school and leaders like Nikola Jokic;
France — confidently shows stable results at the world level;
Canada — with a new wave of NBA stars and an ambitious approach;
Spain, despite the change of generations, remains a dangerous opponent.
History of the Bаsketball World Cup
Argentina hosted the first Basketball World Cup in 1950, in which 10 teams played. Team Argentina won gold playing Team USA, the 1948 Olympic champion, in the final.
In the history of the Basketball Wоrld Cup, the USA and Yugoslavia teams won 5 times each, the USSR team – three times, and the Brazilian and Spanish teams – 2 times each. The Women’s World Basketball Championship was held for the first time in 1953.
Interesting facts about the championship
The first champion — the Argentina national team won the very first tournament in 1950.
The largest number of titles belongs to the US national team — they won the tournament 5 times.
The 2019 tournament in China set a record for viewership — more than 3 billion views worldwide.
The most productive matches were played with a total score of over 200 points.
The youngest participant is a player from Angola, who was only 16 years old during his participation in one of the tournaments.
The 2027 World Cup in Qatar will be the first championship to be held entirely in one city — Doha, which will reduce logistics and increase convenience for fans.

2031 FIBA Basketball World Cup
It is already known that Qatar will host the next basketball championship. This was announced on 28 April 2023. The competition will be held on four basketball courts with a maximum capacity of more than 16,000 people.
