About the Basketball World Cup
The Bаsketball World Cup (also known as the FIBA Basketball World Cup) is an international basketball competition involving men’s national teams. The championship is held once every four years under the auspices of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). 32 teams take part in the event. The winner of the previous championship is the Spanish national team. There is also the FIBA Women’s World Championship, which takes place a year earlier than the men’s competition.
2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup
The 19th Basketball World Cup will be played from 25 August to 10 September in several countries such as Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. This is the first ever tournament in which the host country failed to qualify. The tournament will be held in three stages:
- Group phase;
- Second round;
- Final round.
The 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups. Each team will play each other within their group once. The top two teams from each group will advance to the second round, the remaining teams will face each other to win the 17th to 32nd places.
In the second round, the teams will be separated into 4 groups and will also compete against each other. The top eight teams will meet in the semi-finals.
History of the Bаsketball World Cup
Argentina hosted the first Basketball World Cup in 1950, in which 10 teams played. Team Argentina won gold playing Team USA, the 1948 Olympic champion, in the final.
In the history of the Basketball Wоrld Cup, the USA and Yugoslavia teams won 5 times each, the USSR team – three times, and the Brazilian and Spanish teams – 2 times each. The Women’s World Basketball Championship was held for the first time in 1953.

2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup
It is already known that Qatar will host the next basketball championship. This was announced on 28 April 2023. The competition will be held on four basketball courts with a maximum capacity of more than 16,000 people.
