History of the Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup
The first Field Hockey World Cup was planned to be held in Pakistan in 1971. However, the Pakistanis opposed India’s participation in the championship. Subsequently, all the instability led to the third Indo-Pakistani war so the tournament was moved to Barcelona, Spain. 10 national teams took part in the first Men’s World Cup in field hockey. It was the fewest number of participants in the history of the championships. The Pakistani team became the first world champion.
