2023 NHL All-Star Game

History of the NHL Winter Classic
The first official All-Star Game was played in the 1947/1948 NHL season. There had been several earlier occasions when charity hockey matches had been played.
In 1951, the All-Star Game changed to an All Stars vs. Stanley Cup Champions. The 1951 and 1952 games in the new format ended in a draw, so the League reverted to the previous format.
In 1969, a new format was introduced where Western Division players competed against Eastern Division players.
The 1998 game and the next five games were played with new updates, where North American hockey players competed against world hockey players.
In its entire existence, the All-Star Game has not been played nine times:
- 1979 and 1987, due to games against the USSR national team. In 1979, the Challenge Cup replaced the traditional All-Star Game. The USSR national team defeated the NHL team by a score of 2:1.
- 1995, 2005, 2013, due to lockout.
- 2006, 2010, 2014, because of occupation at the Olympic Games in Turin, Vancouver, Sochi.
- 2021, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
