About the Japanese Grand Prix
The Japanese Grand Prix is a round of the Formula One World Championship. It has been held annually since 1976 with the exception of a break from 1978 to 1986 and 2020, 2021 due to the pandemic.
2026 Japanese Grand Prix
In 2026, the legendary Suzuka circuit will once again host the Japanese Grand Prix — the round will be held from March 27 to 29 and will be the third of the Formula 1 season. This is one of the most iconic circuits in the championship, known for its unique figure-eight track configuration and turns that test the skills of drivers — from the “S-curve” to the famous 130R.
The organizers confirmed that the round will remain on the calendar until at least 2029 — the contract with Formula 1 has been extended. Interestingly, this is not the first time that the Japanese round has been moved to March, including to coincide with the cherry blossom season.
Suzuka is traditionally one of the tracks where championship titles are decided — over the years of the Grand Prix, 12 world champions have been determined here. In the spring of 2026, spectators will once again be treated to one of the most technically challenging and spectacular rounds of the season.
History of racing in Japan
The first Japanese Grand Prix was held in 1963 at Suzuka Circuit. This race marked the beginning of motorsport in Japan. From 1963 to 1976, the race was not part of the F1 World Championship.
The first official Japanese Grand Prix were held at Fuji Speedway in 1976 and 1977.
From 1987 to the present day, the Japanese Grand Prix has been held at Suzuka Circuit. During this time, it has only been held twice, once again at Fuji Speedway in 2007 and the second time in 2008.
In the history of the Japanese Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher was the winner 6 times (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004); Lewis Hamilton won 5 times (2007, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018); Sebastian Vettel won 4 times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013).
