The FIFA U-20 World Cup is an international football event open to young men’s national teams from FIFA member countries not older than 20 years. Finals of the tournament take place every 2 years. There are 24 national teams participating in the final tournament. The host country is automatically qualified for a place in the tournament.
2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup
On October 2, 2025, FIFA announced that the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup would be co-hosted by two countries for the first time: Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. This is a unique event, as the countries are members of different football confederations (UEFA and AFC).

- Where: Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
- When: In 2027 (exact dates have not yet been announced).
- Participants: 24 teams from around the world.
- How to qualify: Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan qualify automatically as hosts. The remaining 22 teams will advance through qualifying matches in their respective regions.
This will be Azerbaijan’s first-ever FIFA Men’s World Cup.
History of the World Youth Cup
In 1977, the first tournament was played in Tunisia. The USSR national team won the tournament by beating Mexico. The first two tournaments were called experimental by FIFA.
In 1981, the first official tournament was held in Australia.
Argentina’s youth team is considered to be the most successful. It has 6 wins under its belt. It’s followed by Brazil with 5 wins.
