The 50th Berlin Marathon will be held on 29 September. It is an international race with a route through Berlin’s major landmarks like the Reichstag, Berlin Victory Column (Siegessäule), Berlin Cathedral, Brandenburg and Potsdamer Platz.
The marathon course is flat and considered one of the fastest in the world.
As there are more people interested in participating in the Berlin Marathon than there are places, the organizers use a lottery procedure to determine who will run. The application period is one year before the event itself.
History of the Berlin Marathon
On 8 November 1964 the first track and field athletics cross took place with over 700 participants. Ten years later the first official Berlin Marathon was held. Until 1981, the marathon was held in a wooded area. Eventually, it was decided to move the event to an asphalt road. This solution made it possible for wheelchair users to participate in the marathon.
In 1989, one of the novelties of the marathon was a mini-marathon in which school children’s teams took part.
In 2006, the prestigious World Marathon Majors series was established with 6 World Marathon Majors: London Marathon, New York City Marathon, Chicago Marathon, Boston Marathon, Tokyo Marathon and Berlin Marathon.
