2022 BWF World Championships

The 2022 BWF World Championships will be held from 22 to 28 August in Tokyo, Japan.

It was announced in 2018 that Tokyo would be the host city for the 2022 World Badminton Championships.

History of the World Badminton Championships

Badminton is considered to be one of the oldest known games. In ancient Greece, India and Japan, a shuttlecock was played, which is the progenitor of the now famous badminton.

Badminton as we know it now became famous in 1973, thanks to Duke of Beaufort. Duke introduced his entire family and local aristocrats to the new game. The very name of the game came from the Badminton House, which became the place where the game developed and spread.

In 1977, the first World Badminton Championships took place. Until 1983, the championships were held every 3 years. From 1985 to 2005, the Championships were held every 2 years. After 2005, the BWF World Championships became an annual event.

In 1992, badminton was included in the Olympics program. Badminton’s popularity grows each year. The sport is particularly popular in south-east Asian countries.
