About the World Fencing Championships
The World Fencing Championship is an annual competition in the sport, organized by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Contestants take part in competitions in:
- foils;
- epee;
- sabres.

2025 Fencing World Championships
The 2025 World Fencing Championships will be held from July 22 to 30 in Tbilisi, Georgia. This will be the first time the Georgian capital will host the world fencing championship. The tournament will be held under the auspices of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) and will be a key stage in the preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Georgia is known for its strong traditions in martial arts, and fencing has been gaining popularity in the country in recent years. Tbilisi promises to host the competition at a high level, providing athletes with a modern arena and excellent conditions for performance.
Who will take part in the tournament?
More than 1,000 athletes from more than 100 countries will take part in the world championship. They will compete for medals in three main fencing disciplines:
- Epee (individual and team);
- Foil (individual and team);
- Sabre (individual and team events).
The tournament will bring together the best fencers in the world, including current champions, future stars and experienced veterans.
Favorites of the championship
France, Italy, USA, Russia, Hungary, South Korea and China are traditionally considered favorites. These countries dominate world championships and the Olympic Games.
Leaders in various types of weapons
- Epee: In the men’s tournament, the main contenders for victory will be Roman Cannone (France) and Gergely Siklosi (Hungary). Among women – Marija Obradovic (Serbia) and Ana Maria Popescu (Romania).
- Foil: The main stars are Lee Kiefer (USA) among women and Alessio Foconi (Italy) among men.
- Sabre: Athletes from Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and South Korea are strong in this discipline.
- Among the main contenders are Sofia Pozdnyakova (Russia) and Olga Kharlan (Ukraine).
The Georgian team, as the host country, will also present its best athletes, who will try to show a decent result at the home championship.
History of the World Fencing Championships
The first international fencing tournament took place in Paris in 1921. As the competitors came from different European countries, the status of the tournament was declared European.
In 1937, the FIE granted the tournament the status of the World Championship. At the same time, it admitted earlier tournaments as World Championships.
Epee competitions for men have been held since 1921 and for women since 1989.
Sabres events for men were introduced in 1922 and for women in 1999.
Men have been competing on foil since 1926. Women’s foil appeared in 1929.
In 1929, the first men’s team competitions – team foil competitions – took place. Team foil competitions for women have been held since 1932.
Fencing World Championships are not held during Olympic Games years.

2027 World Fencing Championships
It is not yet known where the next world fencing championship will be held. The exact dates of the competitions will also be announced later.
