About the World Fencing Championships
The World Fencing Championship is an annual competition in the sport, organized by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). Contestants take part in competitions in:
- foils;
- epee;
- sabres.
2026 Fencing World Championships
The Fencing World Championship 2026 (Senior World Championships 2026) will take place in Hong Kong, China. The exact dates of the championship have not yet been announced, but the competition is expected to be held in late summer to early autumn.
Participants
The championship will feature top fencers, including Olympic champions and winners of previous world championships. Among the favorites are athletes from China, France, Italy, Hungary, and Russia. Notably, Hungarian fencer Áron Szilágyi, a three-time Olympic champion, is considered one of the strongest contenders for the men’s sabre title.
This event will be an important stage in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games, allowing athletes to earn qualification points.
More than 1,000 fencers from over 100 countries are expected to participate in the World Championship, competing for medals in three disciplines:

The tournament will bring together the world’s best fencers, including reigning champions, rising stars, and experienced veterans.
Favorites of the Fencing World Championship
Traditionally, countries with strong fencing traditions are considered leaders: France, Italy, USA, Russia, Hungary, South Korea, and China.

History of the Fencing World Championship
The first international fencing competitions were held in Paris in 1921 and were originally considered European championships.
In 1937, the FIE granted the tournament official World Championship status, retroactively recognizing previous tournaments as world championships.

Men’s foil competitions have been held since 1921, women’s since 1989.

Men’s sabre since 1922, women’s since 1999.

Men’s épée since 1926, women’s since 1929.

The first men’s team épée competition took place in 1929, women’s in 1932.
Fencing World Championships are not held in Olympic years, to preserve the prestige of the tournament and ensure the participation of the world’s top fencers at the Olympics.

2028 World Fencing Championships
It is not yet known where the next world fencing championship will be held. The exact dates of the competitions will also be announced later.
