The UCI Road World Championships is the official annual event in road cycling, organized by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). Cyclists compete for their national teams, not their professional teams, except in team time trials.
Where Will the 2025 Road Cycling World Championships Take Place?
The 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal promises to be a large-scale and spectacular event, featuring both challenging racing courses and a cultural program. The competition will take place from September 20 to 27.
Participants and Spectators: Around 1,000 athletes from more than 75 countries are expected to participate. Organizers hope to attract up to 500,000 spectators, with free admission.
The main favorites
The championship will feature the world’s strongest riders, including Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, Wout van Aert, Mats Pedersen, and Primož Roglič—currently among the top contenders for victory in the men’s elite race. Among the women, Lotte Kepeki, Marleen Reusser, and Annemiek van Vleuten (if she confirms her participation) are considered the main favorites. A record number of countries are expected to participate—national teams from Europe, America, Asia, and, for the first time in history, an expanded African team roster.
History of the UCI Road World Championships
-
The first professional UCI Road World Championship took place in 1927 at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit and was won by Alfredo Binda of Italy.
-
Soviet athletes joined in 1954 after the USSR Cycling Federation became a UCI member.
-
The first women’s championship was held in 1958.
-
Since 1994, the event has included individual time trials for both men and women.
-
Starting in 2023, a combined UCI World Cycling Championships is held every four years, bringing together 13 cycling disciplines — first hosted in Glasgow.
