About the Indian Ocean Island Games
The Indian Ocean Island Games is a multi-sport competition among the island nations and territories of the Indian Ocean. Hosted by the International Island Games Association, the Games are held every 4 years. More than 2000 athletes currently participate in the competition.
2023 Indian Ocean Island Games
The 11th edition of the Indian Ocean Island Gamеs will start on 23 August and end on 3 September 2023 in Madagascar. 2,000 athletes will take part in 17 sports. Countries participating in the Indian Ocean Island Games are:
- The Comoros;
- Madagascar;
- Maldives;
- Mauritius;
- Mayotte;
- Réunion;
- Seychelles.
History of the Games’ creation
In 1974, the Regional Olympic Committee of Réunion initiated a multi-sport event for the Indian Ocean Islands. Only 5 years after this idea, the first games took place, the original name of which was the Indian Ocean Games.
Participants in the first games, held in 1079, included: the Comoros, Mauritius, Maldives and Réunion. Over time, these participants were joined by Madagascar and Mayotte.
In the history of the Indian Ocean Island Gamеs, Reunion is the leader in terms of medals won.

2027 Indian Ocean Island Games
It is tentatively known that the next multi-sport event in the Indian Ocean Islands will be held in Mayotte. Exact dates and competition details are currently unknown.
