The BRICS Sports Games is an international multi-sport event that brings together athletes from many countries. The competitions are organized by the BRICS member countries. Today, BRICS includes the following countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Egypt and Ethiopia. The main goal of the competition is to strengthen friendly sports relations between the countries.
2025 BRICS Games
BRICS Sports Games 2025 will take place in Brazil, as confirmed by Brazil’s Ministry of Sports following a meeting of sports ministers from BRICS countries.
BRICS Games are annual multisport competitions that bring together athletes from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Purpose of the event is to promote sports development, foster friendship, and encourage cultural exchange among these nations.
Games in 2025 are expected to carry on tradition of major international tournaments, strengthening cooperation between member countries and promoting global sports engagement.
History of the competition
The BRICS Sports Games were created to strengthen friendly relations between the participating countries and promote sports cooperation. Since 2017, the event has been held and organized by the country that holds the chair of the group for the current year.
The 2017 and 2018 summits saw the first BRICS Games in the following sports: basketball, volleyball, wushu (Guangzhou, China); football, volleyball, netball (Johannesburg, South Africa).
Following the great success of the competition after the 2018 event, it was decided to expand the sports program. The national sports of the participating countries were included in the program.
From 2019 to 2021, the BRICS Games were not held due to the threat of the spread of COVID-19. The games were held in an online format.
In 2023, the BRICS Games will be held in South Africa.
