History of motor racing in Austria
The Austrian Grand Prix, which was held in 1963 at the Circuit Zeltweg, was an unofficial event.
From the following year, the circuit was included in the F1 World Championship schedule. The winner of the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix was Italian driver Lorenzo Bandini (Ferrari team). After the first official race, the circuit was deemed narrow, dangerous and uncomfortable for spectators. As a consequence, the FIA decided to rule out the Austrian stage until a circuit could be built to meet all safety requirements.
From 1970 to 1987, the Grand Prix was held on the modern Österreichring circuit, which would also no longer fulfil the necessary safety requirements.
Despite modernization of the Österreichring circuit, Austria was removed from the F1 championship again in 2004.
Eleven years later, the Austrian round is back on the well-known motor-racing schedule. For the present, the championship takes place at the Red Bull Ring circuit.
