About the Spanish Grand Prix
The Spanish Grand Prix is a stage of the F1 World Championship and has been running since 1951. At the moment, the race is held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, near Barcelona. The lap length is 4,675m. Michael Schumacher is the most victorious driver in this round of Formula 1. And the winner of the last race is the Red Bull racing driver Max Verstappen.
2026 Spanish Grand Prix
From 2026, the Spanish Grand Prix will move from its usual Barcelona to Madrid – and this is an important update to the Formula 1 calendar. The new Madring street circuit will host the royal race from September 11 to 13, 2026. Race will take place on a street-circuit track next to the IFEMA exhibition center, close to the airport and main transport hubs – all for the sake of spectacle and convenience for fans.
The organizers promise a fast, technical track of about 5.5 km in length with 22 turns, tunnels and spectacular connections – something between Singapore and Baku. Madring is designed with sustainability in mind: an eco-friendly approach, renewable energy and maximum accessibility are expected. According to the plan, the track will accommodate more than 110 thousand spectators daily.
Participants
All the top teams of the 2026 season will take part in the start: Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Audi/Sauber, Ford/Red Bull, as well as the new Cadillac team. The favorites include Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Who exactly will be at the front will depend on the shape of the cars and their adaptation to the new track.
Interestingly, in 2026, Spain will be the only country with two F1 rounds: in June, Barcelona will host the last Grand Prix in its history at the Catalunya circuit (12–14 June), and in September, Madrid will make its debut.
Thus, the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix promises to be not just a race, but a real milestone for the championship – with a new location, a new format and high expectations.
History of Formula One racing in Spain
The first Spanish F1 Grand Prix took place in 1951 at the Pedralbes Circuit. In fact, the history of Spanish motor racing goes back much further than that: back in 1913 on a circuit just outside of Madrid.
Until 1951, the stage in Spain had gone through different times: lack of financial support, a move to a circuit on the north coast as well as the civil war.
Following the tragedy of the death of spectators at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, the Pedralbes circuit was removed from the calendar. F1 history in Spain resumed in 1967 and would regularly change venues until 1991, with the race taking place occasionally at the Circuit of Jarama or Montjuïc in Barcelona.
Since 1991, the Spanish Grand Prix has been held at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Since this event has been held, Michael Schumacher has won the Spanish Grand Prix 6 times (1995, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).
