History of the Tour of Lombardy
The Giro di Lombardia made its debut on 12 November 1905. Giovanni Gerbi was the first winner, outsmarting his rivals, thus winning 40 minutes of time for himself.
From 1907 onwards the popularity of the cycling race began to soar. The cyclists of the last century, François Faber and Henri Pélissier, won the race. Surprisingly, the race was even held during the First World War. In more than a century of history the race did not take place until 1943 and 1944, when northern Italy was occupied by the Germans.
Fausto Coppi is a five-time Giro champion. His success came in the post-war years.
In 1965, the route of the bicycle race for the first time went around Lake Como, which is a tradition today.
The prestige of the Giro di Lombardia is very high.
In 2006, the Il Lombardia celebrated its first anniversary. Paolo Bettini won the bicycle race and became world champion the week before.
