About the Russian Women’s Volleyball Cup in Memory of Givi Akhvlediani

The Russian Cup among women’s volleyball teams in memory of Honoured Coach of the USSR Givi Akhvlediani is the national annual women’s volleyball championship which was first held in 1993.

The competition among men’s volleyball teams is called the Russian Volleyball Cup in memory of Konstantin Reva, and has been held annually since 1993.

2022 Russian Volleyball Cup in Memory of Givi Akhvlediani

The 2022 Russian Women’s Volleyball Open Cup in memory of Givi Akhvlediani kicked off with the preliminary rounds on September 5-11. The semi-finals were held on October 27-30. Later, the finalists will be determined and they will play in the finals on December 16-18 in Tula. The Final Four participants are “Tulitsa” (Tula), “Lokomotiv” (Kaliningrad Oblast), “Dinamo” (Moscow), “Dynamo-Metar” (Chelyabinsk).

History of the Russian Women’s Volleyball Cup

The first Women’s Volleyball Cup of Russia competitions took place in 1993. And only in 2009, the tournament was renamed in honour of Givi Akhvlediani, the great coach, Cavalier of the Volleyball Hall of Fame.

The competitions are held in several stages: preliminary and final stages. Till 2004, 6-8 teams were divided into two groups and competed among themselves for places – 1st to 4th and 5th to 8th.

Since 2005, the format of the tournament has been changed so that now 4 teams qualify for the final stage – the Final Four – and they compete for places 1-3.

The team with the most wins is Dinamo-Ak Bars (7 wins).

Anna Matiyenko is the most titled player. She is a two-time champion of Russia and European champion.
