The United States Grand Prix is one of the stages of the Formula One World Championship and has been held since 1959. Most of the US Grand Prix were held at Watkins Glen Circuit, from 1961 to 1980.

Until 2007, the United States Grand Prix was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

From 2008 to 2011 there was a break for F1 motor racing.

In 2012, Formula One returned to the USA, and the race was held at the new Circuit of the Americas. This track was the first auto racing circuit in America to be built specifically for F1 racing.

2022 United States Grand Prix

The 2022 United States Grand Prix Formula One will take place on 23 October.

History of motor racing in the USA

A full-fledged Grand Prix in the United States appeared in 1959. It was won by racing driver Bruce McLaren, becoming the youngest ever Grand Prix winner. Despite this, the 1959 and 1960 Grand Prix proved unprofitable for the organizers.

In 1961, the American Grand Prix moved to Watkins Glen, where it was held for the next 20 years. After 1980 the circuit ceased to meet safety requirements. Thereafter the American Grand Prix was held at street circuits of Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix.

Over time, American interest in Formula One began to wane. Eventually, the race was discontinued until 2000.

In 2000, the United States Grand Prix was organized at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit. But nevertheless, United States Grand Prix fans were getting far less than Indy 500 fans.

After 2007, the Grand Prix was no longer held in Indianapolis, due to conflict between F1 management and the owner of the Indianapolis circuit.  Since 2012, the United States Grand Prix has been held at the track in Austin, Texas.

Since 2022, the second United States Grand Prix has also been held on the home turf, the Miami Grand Prix.
