About the Mexico City Grand Prix

The Mexico City Grand Prix is one of the stages of the Formula One World Championship. It was held as part of the World Championship in the seasons 1963-1970, 1986-1992, 2015-2019 and as a non-championship race in 1962.

All official Mexican Grand Prix races have been held at the Mexico City circuit. The circuit was named after the Rodríguez brothers who died during a F1 race.

From 2020, the name of the Mexican Grand Prix has been changed to the Mexico City Grand Prix to highlight the city’s support.

2022 Mexico City Grand Prix

The 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix Formula One will take place on 30 October.

History of motor racing in Mexico

The history of F1 racing in Mexico began in the early 60s. Ricardo Rodríguez, who was not yet twenty, made his Formula One debut. The young Mexican’s success was linked to his results at the Belgian Grand Prix, in which he finished fourth, as well as his victory at the popular road race, Targa Florio.

Since 1963, the Mexican stage has become an important part of the Grand Prix. At a conservative estimate, the Mexican Grand Prix has attracted up to 200,000 spectators. Despite this popularity, the FIA declined to renew the Mexican contract after 1970. The reasons were: the poor quality of the asphalt; safety that the police could not provide for spectators.

In the early 1980s, the Mexican Grand Prix was given new life. It was decided to shorten the overall length of the circuit, as well as to build tall nets that could contain the fans.

At the time, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez brought Michael Schumacher his first success.

Unfortunately, as time went on, problems with the track reappeared. So, following the race in 1992, Formula One left Mexico once again.
