About the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship
The Volleyball Women’s World Championship is an international women’s volleyball tournament which has been played every four years since 1952, under the auspices of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). It ranks second only to the Olympic Games in terms of prestige for national teams in the sport.
2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship
The 19th FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will be held at the stadiums in Poland and the Netherlands from 23 September to 15 October. 24 national teams will be represented.
History of the Volleyball Women’s World Championship
It was the first World Championship held in outdoor venues. The tournament was held in 1952 at the Dynamo Stadium in Moscow, with the Soviet Union team taking first place, as they did in two subsequent championships (1956, 1960).
All in all, teams from 61 countries took part in the World Championships.
Among the most renowned volleyball players, Alexandra Chudina, Militia Yeremeeva, Lyudmila Buldakova (USSR) are considered the three-time world champions.
11 countries have hosted World Championships: Japan – 5 times; USSR – 3 times; Brazil – 2 times.
Only the USSR team (1952) and Japanese team (1967) managed to win at home.
