History of the Pan American Games
The idea for such an event originated at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Latin American representatives of the IOC proposed the creation of a competition. It would take place between South American and North American countries.
It was not until nearly 20 years later, in 1951, that the first Pan American Games were held. They took place in Buenos Aires, Brazil. 2,513 athletes from 14 countries competed in 18 sports.
Later, the organizers came up with the idea of staging a winter Games. The idea was realized only once, in 1990. Unlike the Summer Games, however, most countries did not support the idea, for a variety of reasons.
