Russians are ready to pay for online education

An average check of Russians for online courses, training, and master classes grew by about 20% year-on-year, a new research by Yandex.Checkout and the online university Netology showed. At the same time, turnover of the online education market increased by over 60%.

It turned out that only 8% of the respondents have an experience of studying online, but 40% suppose they can take online courses in the future.

What are the most popular types of online education?

  • 69% — language courses;
  • 10% — personal development, leadership skills, creativity courses;
  • 8% — professional education;
  • 6% — psychology and esotericism courses;
  • 3% — tutoring services;
  • 2% — online sports and beauty courses;
  • 2% — crafts and hobbies courses.

How much are Russians ready to pay for online education?

In the sphere of online education, people spend the most on foreign languages—the average sum is 9,874 roubles because people buy not a single lesson but rather a whole course. Psychology and esotericism courses took the No. 2 spot with the average check of 4,976 roubles. Personal development courses are the third most popular online courses — people spend an average of 3,667 roubles on them. The smallest average amount is paid for tutoring services (619 roubles).

During a year, a single user spends on online foreign language courses about 36,441 roubles. The No. 2 spot is taken by psychology and esotericism courses (8,760 roubles), the third most popular online courses are sports and beauty courses (7,773 roubles).

The survey showed that 44% of Russians lack professional skills after graduation, and another 13% lack knowledge.

People who are most interested in online education earn from 40,000 to 75,000 roubles a month. About 60% of them feel the need for new knowledge. Among those who earn over 100,000 roubles a month, only 40% believe they lack professional knowledge or skills.

14% of respondents would like to try a new profession or specialization.

The research is based on data about payments users made with Yandex.Checkout (used by over 106.000 websites) in 2017 and 2018. Netology surveyed 1,500 residents from 37 Russian cities with a population of over 500,000 people.
