About the Spanish Women’s Super Cup
The Supercopa de España Femenina (Spanish Women’s Super Cup) is an annual Spanish football mini-tournament that involves the champion and vice-champion teams of Spain, as well as the finalists of the Copa de la Reina/Queen’s Cup (third place teams in the championship may qualify for the tournament).
A similar men’s football event is called the Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España).
2022-23 Supercopa de España Femenina
This is the 8th edition of the Spanish Women’s Super Cup and the 4th edition in the “Final Four” format to be held in Spain from 17 to 22 January 2023.
The teams taking part in the Women’s Super Cup are:
- Barcelona (Spanish champion 2021/2022 and Copa del Rey 2021/2022 winner);
- Huelva (finalist of the Spanish Cup 2021/2022);
- Real Sociedad (Spanish vice-champion 2020/2021);
- Real Madrid (third place in the La Liga 2020/2021).
History of the Supercopa de España Femenina
The first Spanish Women’s Super Cup took place in 1997. At that time, the tournament was played between two teams and consisted of two matches – a home and an away match. The mini-tournament consisted of the champion and the winner of the Copa del Rey. This format of the tournament lasted until 2000.
From 2019, the tournament began to exist in a new format, which is relevant today.
