History of motor racing in Singapore
The Singapore Grand Prix was already held in Singapore from 1961 to 1973, however it was not part of the Formula One Schedule. Until 1965 the race was known as the Malaysian Grand Prix. In 1972 and 1973 fatal accidents occurred at the race, after which it was decided to close it down.
After a 35-year hiatus, in 2008, the racing event was resumed as one of the stages of F1 and was called Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. Since then, the race has been held annually and has enjoyed great success and popularity.
