History of motor racing in Italy
The first Italian Grand Prix took place in Brescia on 4 September 1921. At that time Monza Circuit was under construction and when it was completed all Italian Grand Prix races were held at this circuit.
In 1950 the first official season of F1 racing began. From the start the Italian Grand Prix has been an integral part of all F1 seasons.
The only race that did not take place at the Monza circuit was the Italian Grand Prix in 1980. The stage was held at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, better known as Imola Circuit. It was due to an accident that claimed the life of a Swedish car racer. The racers demanded work at Monza to improve safety.
