Residents of Russia who do not yet have their own Telegram channel have no idea how to start or monetize a personal blog. But the majority of respondents (91%) consider earning money in messenger a promising idea. Such data is contained in the December study by Perfluence and Yandex.Vzglyad.
- The most attractive topics for running Telegram channels: personal blogs and Lifestyle (52%), travelling (32%), marketplaces and sales (27%), finance (11%), marketing and PR (6%).
- How much can be earned in Telegram: according to Russians, this ranges from RUB 10,000 per month (31%) to “over RUB 100,000” (25%).
- Telegram’s audience in Russia: people spend several hours a day in the messenger (46%), and visit it several times a week (33%). 60% of Russians desire not only to consume content, but also to profit from Telegram.
Towards the end of 2023, the Telegram messenger rolled out several updates making the channel promotion (including on betting and gambling) more effective.
How to organize a Telegram channel?
From December 2023, channels can set wallpapers, emoji statuses and profile logos.
Channel administrators of different levels* can customize the look and feel of channels:
- channel owners in Telegram can choose the colour of the channel name, the background of messages, as well as the colour and logo for the channel cover in the profile.
- any of thousands of emoji from Telegram artists can be set next to the channel name.
- to change the channel’s look and feel, go to Channel Settings > Design.
*You can raise the channel level by receiving votes from users or conducting drawings. Channel level also affects the number of available settings and the option to publish more stories.
Channel admins can view reactions to stories as well as see a list of those who have reposted their stories.
Attracting users to your channel
Telegram’s December 2023 update allows you to add a personalized link from a specific ad on Telegram. The feature is only available for open channels (it doesn’t work for posts; you can’t advertise private channels).
Users also got new features in Telegram:
- posts from channels can be reposted in Stories. A copy of the message can be edited: move, zoom and add various design elements. All types of messages can be reposted in Stories, including photos, files, and even voice and video messages.
- to repost a message from a channel to Stories, click on the forwarding arrow next to it and select “Repost to Stories”.
Setting up targeting in Telegram
New features enabling more precise targeting will ensure greater reach of the target audience. Moreover, the cost of the advert itself and the price of a subscriber will be reduced.
- New targeting in Telegram: by device. Adjust the advertising campaign to users’ devices: you can choose the operating system (iOS or Android) or mobile/desktop version.
- Targeting specific channels: ads will be shown to subscribers from the selected list of channels. In addition, there is an option to exclude the audience of a particular channel.
- Intersection of interests: when selecting several interests of users, you can make the audiences not add to each other, but work in intersection. As a result, Telegram will select channels for advertising that fit all the chosen interests at once.
