More than half of Russians use social networks (62%) and messengers (57%), among which VKontakte and WhatsApp are the most popular ones, a survey conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation has shown. Survey respondents were asked to name as many social networks and messengers as they do use.
41% of respondents use VKontakte: these are the overwhelming majority of the youth and more than half of persons aged between 31 and 45 years. Odnoklassniki takes the second place (33%) being the most popular social network among the over-46-year-olds. Instagram (21%) and Facebook (10%) are on the third place and mostly used by Moskovites. 5% of respondents visit Moi Mir (My World), and 4% mentioned Twitter as well. 37% of Russians said that they do not use any social networks.
WhatsApp is the most popular messenger with slightly more users among respondents (44%) than those of VKontakte. Then go Viber (26%), Skype (15%), Telegram (8%), Facebook Messenger (3%), and ICQ (1%). 42% of Russians claim to manage without any messengers at all.
