So many interesting things happened in gambling and betting in October 2024! On 3S.INFO we’ve gathered all the important events of last month: where new laws appeared, how the fight against the shadow sector of online casinos and bookmakers is going on, and how the rules of promotion are changing.
What happened in October with online betting and gambling advertising?
In Australia, new player identification rules came into effect. Before betting on a bookmaker’s website, players are now required to go through ACIP (Applicable Customer Identification Procedures). This will make verification more reliable and prevent cases of money laundering and fraud.
An interesting trend has emerged in the UK. Here, banks have started to deny people mortgages because of sports betting. Although betting is officially allowed in the country, some bank customers were denied loans on this basis. Lenders listed having an account with a bookmaker as a high-risk factor, even if betting was only done on weekends or occasionally.
On December 1, Georgia imposes new regulations on the gambling and betting market. Georgia issues an “offshore license” allowing the acceptance of local and foreign players. Such a license allows the use of two domains: for Georgian and foreign audiences, respectively. The license will cost $1.7 million for online casinos, $340,200 for online slots and $34,000 for online bookmakers. Local online casino players will be charged a 5% tax on withdrawals after the tax rate change. Foreign players will not be charged this tax. Bookmakers will pay 7% of the wagers of Georgian players and 5% of the GGR received from foreign players.
Colombia is also beginning to actively combat illegal online gambling. An Artificial Intelligence Center (CIAC) has been created to monitor the online gambling market. Its functions include tracking transactions of licensed operators, protecting against attacks and cloning of sites of legitimate brands. In addition, AI can track social media profiles that run illegal sweepstakes and promote unauthorized gambling sites.
In Latvia, strict regulation of betting and gambling has led to dismal results. Players’ access to information about licensed brands has been hampered by a total ban on advertising casinos and online bookmakers. Eventually, the offshore gaming sector grew to nearly 25%.
In October, Macau enacted Law No. 20/2024 to combat illegal gambling. Now, those who organize the work of a bookmaker or casino without a license fall under the Criminal Code. The penalty for such an offense is from 1 to 8 years imprisonment.
The Turkish authorities are beginning a more active fight against illegal gambling. In October, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority of Turkey reported on Operation Sibergoz-46. The operation targeted the websites of illegal bookmakers operating under the Acarbet, Atlasbet and Nakitbahis brands. As a result, more than 2 million illegal dollars were identified. More than 1 million devices and approximately 3,000 virtual POS systems were blocked.
Ecuador has lifted the ban on gambling advertising! Land-based gambling is prohibited here, but the online sector is unregulated.
