  • WhatsApp is the most popular messenger in Russia. More than half — 56.3% or 69 million — of Russians aged 12+ use it.
  • Viber is No.2 with its monthly audience of 37.3 million people, or 30.5% of all Russians.
  • Telegram came in third with 20.5 million users, or 16.8%.

Skype and Discord took fourth and fifth with 5.6% and 4.2%, respectively.

These data were presented in the latest study by Mediascope. The study counted people who opened a messaging app on their smartphones or computers at least once in December 2019.

An earlier study also showed that more than a third of Russians (34%) use special software to access blocked websites. 8% of Russians do it on a regular basis, 12% from time to time, and 15% rarely.

At the beginning of 2020, App Annie’s report told about the most downloaded mobile apps in Russia in the past 10 years.
