International Internet Day is celebrated annually on April 4th to highlight the internet’s role in improving access to knowledge, education, healthcare, communications, and other aspects of life. This day also serves as a reminder about the importance of personal data protection and combating cybercrime.
Today, the internet has 5.35 billion users. This means 64.4% of the world’s population has internet access. Digital data analysis conducted by ITU, GSMA Intelligence, Eurostat, and local authorities revealed significant growth in internet users during 2023. New research shows a 1.8% increase (or +97 million new users), reaching the impressive figure of 5.35 billion by early 2024.
How did the holiday originate?
The idea of celebrating International Internet Day is connected to the Catholic Church and the April 4th feast day of Saint Isidore of Seville, the patron saint of students and scholars. Since 2003, Saint Isidore has also become the patron saint of internet users.
International Internet Day emphasizes the importance of information access, freedom of speech, and knowledge sharing through online resources. Every year on April 4th, various events, conferences, initiatives, and campaigns are held to raise awareness about digital literacy, online safety, and building positive online communities.
