February 14 marks the unofficial but widely celebrated Computer Specialist Day in professional circles.
On February 14, 1946, the world’s first fully functional electronic computer, ENIAC I (Electrical Numerical Integrator And Calculator), was demonstrated to scientists and interested parties. Development of the system began in 1942, and by 1945 the computer was already operational, saving staff from weeks of manual calculations. This historic event became the foundation of Computer Specialist Day.
The completed hardware complex occupied a 140 sq.m. room. The device weighed 30 tons and contained approximately 18,000 vacuum tubes, 1,500 relays, plus hundreds of thousands of resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
Russia also has an official professional holiday – Programmer’s Day, which falls on September 13 in common years and September 12 in leap years.
